What is yoga?

Yoga is an art, a science, and a philosophy; once you begin to practice yoga, it can become a lifestyle and lead to many other healthy choices because it simply makes you feel better.  The word yoga comes from the ancient scriptural language of India, Sanskrit.  The root yuj means “to yoke” or “to unite.”  Yoga seeks to unite the mental with the physical.  In other words, it brings together body, mind, and spirit.  It is much more than just physical exercise; it brings about a heightened sense of self-awareness.

Yoga originated in ancient India, but is not a religious practice; the tradition does not belong to any particular culture or ethnicity.  Today, it is considered mainstream, because so many around the world have discovered its benefits. The following are some of the benefits of yoga: Improved posture and balance; Stretching and holding the postures causes muscles to lengthen, which gives the body a longer, leaner look  (This is great if you practice another sport where you are building strong, tight muscles (running, biking, weight-lifting…); Build strength and flexibility at the same time (The postures are meant to strengthen your body from the inside-out, so you don’t just look good, you feel good too.  Poses reinforce the muscles around the spine; when the core is working properly, there is less back, shoulder and neck pain); Yoga’s deep breathing and meditation allows you to better deal with stress.  Unclutter your mind.  Learn to experience a sense of peace and tranquility.

Your instructor is Tracy Barton, a yoga practitioner for about 20 years, with over 5 years of experience teaching yoga.  She completed her 200-hour teacher training program and became certified with the Yoga Alliance in 2014. Tracy teaches primarily Hatha yoga, which focuses on basic postures at a gentle, comfortable pace.  If you are new to yoga, you will learn the basic postures, beginning slowly and gently, with attention to alignment, thereby avoiding injury.  Breath work (pranayama – or deep breathing) is incorporated into the classes.  All yoga classes include basic poses and breath work, as well as stretching (lengthening muscles, developing flexibility), balance poses, inversions, gentle backbends, strength-building poses, short sequences (or yoga flow) to invigorate the body, and deep relaxation.  At the end of each hour-long practice, you will feel refreshed, energized, and relaxed at the same time.
